Small-Batch Roasted Coffee: Why You Should Care

The coffee roasting process is ultimately going to have a big impact on aroma and depth of flavor in your cup.  Even high-quality beans can produce a sub-par brew if best roasting practices are not followed.  Small batch roasting allows roasters more oversight, resulting in more consistency and higher-quality in the final product.  Poor roasting practices are more likely to be overlooked when beans are mass-produced.  A few key benefits of small batch roasting include:

  1. Consistency: Small batch roasted coffee provides a more consistent flavor because it’s easier for the roaster to keep the beans moving to ensure an even roast. This is not often the case with large-batch roasting, where the process is automated and mechanized, as the beans don’t receive the same level of TLC that only small batch roasters can offer.
  2. Freshness & Flavor: Small batch roasted coffee tends to be fresher and more flavorful than large-batch roasted coffee. For example, roasting our coffee in small batches allows Cock-A-Doodle coffee to ship beans to customers on the same day that they are roasted.  100% fresh.  Large-batch roasted coffee is mass produced and can take weeks to churn through the inventory.  Coffee flavor tends to peak 3-4 weeks after roasting.  The fresher your beans, the more flavor in your cup.
  3. Sourcing: Small batch roasted coffee beans can sometimes allow the roaster to source beans from small communities or family-owned farms. This is not the case with a large-batch roaster who is simply looking for quantity to meet a volume threshold.  Small batch roasting can provide the roaster with the flexibility to source higher-quality beans of their choosing and to support small business at the same time.

In summary, small batch roasted coffee provides a more flavorful and consistent experience for coffee drinkers than large batch roasted coffee.
